Privacy policy

Mixtape Mood turns how you feel into a mixtape of real songs. It is free, there are no user accounts, and we collect as little as we can. This page explains what happens to your information.

Who we are

Mixtape Mood (mixtapemood.com) is run by the Mixtape Mood team, Cyprus. Contact: [email protected]. We are the controller of the personal data described here.

What you type and choose

• Your mood (the words you type, the moods you tap, the energy, mood and era sliders) is sent to our server and to Anthropic's Claude API, which picks the songs and writes the tape label. While you type, your words are also sent to read the mood for the sliders.
• We don't keep your mood beyond what the service needs: a copy of each generated mixtape (including your mood) for up to 2 minutes, to avoid making the same mixtape twice. Mood readings are cached for a day without anything that identifies you.
• Anthropic processes this data for us under its commercial terms, which do not allow using it to train their models. See Anthropic's privacy policy. Anthropic is based in the United States.
• If your words suggest you may be in crisis, the page shows helpline information. This is not a medical or emergency service.

Share links

When you press "Share", your browser sends us the tape, we check that we made it, and we store it (title, liner note, colours and songs) for 90 days at an unguessable address. Anyone with the link can see it. Your own words are included only if you tick "Include what I wrote". To remove a shared tape sooner, send us its link.

Technical data and limits

To keep the service free and fair (a limited number of mixtapes per visitor per day), our server turns your IP address into a one-way code (a salted hash) and counts requests against it, together with the fair-use cookie described below. IPv6 addresses are counted by their network part, since one home can use many addresses. We don't store IP addresses themselves; the counters expire within about a day. We also keep a running total of our daily AI costs, which contains no personal data.

The first time a browser makes a mixtape, we may run Cloudflare Turnstile, an invisible check that the request comes from a person and not an automated script. Cloudflare receives your IP address and technical details about your browser for this check only. Once passed, your browser is trusted for a week and not checked again. If a page breaks in your browser, it sends us a short error report (the error message, the technical trace and which page it was, without share-link codes). It contains nothing about you and is kept only in our server logs, which are overwritten as they fill up.

We count page visits with GoatCounter, running on our own server: no cookies, no IP addresses stored, no tracking across sites. We see only totals, such as how many times a page was opened, which site linked to it, and the browser, screen size and country, never who you are.

Stored in your browser

• A locale cookie remembers the language you chose (1 year).
• A mm_vid cookie holds a random id, so each browser gets its own daily allowance even when many people share one internet connection (1 year). It is used only for these limits, our server keeps only a one-way hash of it, and it is never used for tracking or advertising.
• Local storage keeps your recent mixtapes ("My mixtapes", the last 20) and the songs and titles of recent tapes, so new tapes don't repeat them. The recent songs are sent with your next request for that purpose.
• You can delete all of this at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.

These are strictly necessary for features you ask for, so they don't need consent. Advertising cookies are described under Advertising and are only used with your consent where the law requires it.

Other services you may use from Mixtape Mood

• Apple. 30-second previews, artwork and song checks come from Apple's iTunes Search and Apple Music services. Your browser loads previews directly from Apple, so Apple sees your IP address. See Apple's privacy policy.
• YouTube. Mixtape Mood uses YouTube API Services. Our server looks up videos for songs; "Full song" plays them in an embedded YouTube player (loaded from youtube-nocookie.com); "Open as a YouTube playlist" opens YouTube with the chosen videos. We never ask you to sign in with Google and never access your Google or YouTube account. By using these features you are bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, and the Google Privacy Policy applies.
• MusicBrainz, Discogs and YouTube search. When Apple can't confirm a song, our server may check it in the open MusicBrainz and Discogs databases or with a YouTube search. Only the song and artist names are sent, never anything about you.
• Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube links open those services, where their own privacy policies apply.

Donations

The "Buy me a coffee" link opens Buy Me a Coffee, which handles the payment. If you donate, Buy Me a Coffee may share with us the details you give it, such as your name, email address and message. We use them only to thank you and keep the records the law requires. See the Buy Me a Coffee privacy policy.

Hosting

The site runs on a server of Hetzner Online GmbH (Gunzenhausen, Germany) in its data centre in Falkenstein, Germany. Limits, caches and share links are kept in a database on that same server. Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) sits in front of the site to protect it and speed it up, so it processes visitors' IP addresses and requests, under its EU data protection terms (see the Cloudflare privacy policy).

Advertising

To keep Mixtape Mood free, some pages show a few ads from Google AdSense (never over the music player). Google may use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads, and, where you agree, to personalise them. In the EU/EEA and the UK, Google's consent tool asks for your choice first; ads that don't rely on consent may still be shown without personalisation. You can change your choice at any time with "Privacy settings" at the bottom of every page. Legal bases

We process data to provide the service you ask for, and on our legitimate interest in keeping it running, secure and free of abuse (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b) and (f)). Optional features that need consent will ask for it (Art. 6(1)(a)).

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, object to processing, or restrict it. Because there are no accounts, we usually can't link data to you. For a share link, send us the link. You can also complain to the Cyprus Commissioner for Personal Data Protection (dataprotection.gov.cy).

Children

Mixtape Mood is not directed at children under 14.
